The Law Library staff have been working hard to welcome you safely while meeting your various needs. We’re excited to see you in person and hope you’ll explore our spaces and resources. Please keep in mind that the University of Iowa encourages all visitors to wear masks while in the library, in accordance with current health recommendations.

Why is Law School Three Years?

Check out the Law Library’s latest display which chronicles how law school became a three-year program. You can check it out at the entrance to the Law Library on the 2nd Floor.

Borrowing during a Pandemic

Due to public health guidelines, the library asks you to cooperate with Circulation Staff in following current check-out procedures. We plan to install a self-checkout machine sometime soon, so stay tuned for updates.

Items in the Library available for checkout (other than tech equipment) will be due at the end of the semester. Because of the challenges of circulating popular Reserve materials, the library recommends accessing study aids through the LexisNexis Digital Library,  West Academic Study Aids, and the Wolters Kluwer Study Aid Library. If you have any questions about accessing or using these titles, please reach out to the Reference Librarians at refdesk@uiowa.edu.

Technology Tools – Chargers and Adapters

The Law Library has some computer chargers and adapters available for 2-hour checkout. Please return the items promptly so other students can use them AND so you do not incur new fines. Here is a list of the chargers and adapters that will be available and remember to thank the ISBA for hearing student requests and advocating for this service!

Technology Tools – Scanning and printing

The Law Library has two black and white printers and one scanner on the 2nd Floor. It also has one black and white printer available in the Computer Lab on the 1st Floor. Information Technology Services (ITS) created a tool to remotely release print jobs using your laptop or other device, and the Law Library has a computer near the printers for releasing print jobs. (Please visit the ITS website for updated information.) We continue to encourage everyone to wipe off shared devices for the next user. If there are no wipes available, please go to the Circulation Desk for assistance.

Food-No | Drink-Yes

As a reminder, drinks are permitted in spill-proof containers, but food is not permitted in the Law Library. Please enjoy your meals and snacks outside the library so everyone can enjoy a clean, pest-free environment. We encourage you to use these breaks to recharge your body and to give your brain a chance to absorb legal concepts.

Need Research Assistance?

The friendly and experienced Reference Librarians are available to help you Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm and Saturday, 9am – 5pm. (We are in the processing of hiring additional help so we can extend our reference hours.) If you need research assistance, there are several options: visit the Circulation Desk to speak with a Reference Librarian in person; send an email to refdesk@uiowa.edu  and provide as much information as you feel comfortable sharing so the librarian can identify some resources to get you started or to answer your question; or call (319) 335-9005 and leave a detailed message – the Reference Librarians regularly monitor the voicemail and will explore potential sources before they return your call, so that after the return call, you can move forward with your research.

If you have further questions about the library and its services, we’re ready and eager to assist.
