Chester Smith held degrees from University of South Dakota and Harvard University. After graduating from law school in 1924, he taught law at Montana State University School of Law and Tulane University School of Law. He served as a law professor at University of Iowa from 1927 to 1929. He also served as a First Lieutenant in the Field Artillery during World War I. After leaving Iowa, he joined the faculty at University of Arizona College of Law, where he spent the rest of his career. He focused on legal analysis and examination, including conducting an Arizona bar exam preparation course. He died in 1964.
