United States Law Collection: What We Have

The United States Law Collection encompasses federal, state, tribal, and affiliated territorial primary law, as well as books and treatises, practice guides and handbooks, law journals and commentaries, dictionaries and encyclopedias, and many more resources, covering all topics of United States law. The Law Library is also a selective depository of the Federal Depository Library Program.

The Law Library holds an especially complete collection of federal and state primary legal materials and supplements. The collection includes legislation, laws, cases, regulations, and other legal documents of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the United States and all of its individual states and territories.

Materials for the State of Iowa are collected extensively. Our collection of Iowa’s legislative, executive and judicial documents is among the best in the nation and provides an important resource for the study of current and historical Iowa law.

The University of Iowa Law Library collects and preserves legal information to support researchers and members of the public. As Iowa’s only public academic law library, the Law Library is an important resource for the entire state.

The Law Library’s collection is a result of a strategic investment by the University of Iowa, to provide the University of Iowa, lawyers and government officials, Iowans, and other researchers with a broad and deep collection of legal resources. This collection has been thoughtfully curated over decades, and continues to improve through a focus on both the needs of today’s researchers and the need to preserve legal information for tomorrow's leaders.
