    Moung Edwin born.

    1849

    August 5, 1849, in Way-ya, Kyoung Bassein, Burma. It is located west of Rangoon on the delta of the Irrawaddy River.

    Shway Bo converts.

    1851

    Moung Edwin's father converts from Buddhism, becoming the first Pwo Karen Baptist minister.

    Arrives in U.S.

    1869

    Baptist missionaries bring Moung Edwin to study in the U.S. He plans to return to Burma and be a missionary among the Karen.

    1871 - 1875

    Columbian (George Washington University today) was founded in 1821 by Baptist missionary & minister Luther Rice.

    The local newspaper reports that Moung Edwin plans to speak on "The Influence of Languages" for commencement. He asks to be excused "owing to imperfect command over his adopted tongue." He won high honors in his class.

    Moung Edwin wins:
    - 1871: Silver medal for Punctuality & Deportment
    - 1874: Elton Prize for Greek
    - 1875: Ruggles Prize in Mathematics

    Newton Theological Institution.

    1875 - 1876

    Studies here one year, then transfers to Crozer Theological Seminary. Newton is a Baptist seminary founded in 1825 in Newton Centre, Massachusetts.

    Crozer Theological Seminary.

    1876 - 1878

    Bachelor of Divinity, 1878. 

    In 1858, John Price Crozer built a school in Upland, Pennsylvania, that eventually became a seminary. It served as an American Baptist Church school from 1869-1970.

    Martin Luther King, Jr. attended Crozer from 1948-1951.

    1878 - 1879

    Law school was one year at this time and was housed in Central Hall (Old Capitol). In between classes, Moung Edwin travelled the Midwest giving lectures.

    1879 - 1880

    Moung Edwin lectures in England, Scotland, Wales, and Germany.

    Returns to Burma.

    1881

    Lives in Tharrawaddy, Burma. He describes himself as a “preacher and a pleader.” He marries and has 5 children. The eldest is a daughter who marries in 1910.
