Call for Papers

Abstract Submission Deadline: Monday, July 15, 2024

The University of Iowa Law Library invites paper proposals for its Symposium, “Law Collections Symposium: Seeding Our Future” to be held at the University’s Boyd Law Building from Friday, September 20, 2024 to Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Earlier this year, the American Bar Association significantly revised its accreditation Standards for law libraries and information resources. Determining the best path forward for  the academic law library community requires thoughtful, sustained discussion and calls to action. This Symposium seeks to bring together librarians exploring issues around our fundamental missions, stewarding and curating collections, and the impact on libraries’ ability to provide services when they are ever more reliant on licensing unstable content than owning physical collections. The goal of the Symposium is to generate and challenge ideas, channel discussions, and provide attendees with actionable ideas to bring back to their institutions, no matter the size. We will work together to create a fruitful environment for ideas to grow and take root.

For full consideration, please submit proposals in the form of abstracts no more than 400 words by July 15, 2024 to the University of Iowa Law Library (law-library@uiowa.edu). Proposals will be vetted by the selection committee. We are interested in ideas and will not be evaluating proposals on the scholarly record of the authors or the stage of progress. Selection will be based on relevance, originality, and ability to engage meaningful discussion.

Participants will be notified of their selection during the AALL Annual Meeting in July. Drafts of papers (between 5,000 and 10,000 words) will be due approximately two weeks prior to the Symposium. Those whose proposals are accepted will be invited to present at the Symposium and will have the opportunity to publish their completed work in the Iowa Law Review Online

We look forward to your submissions. Questions can be directed to either of the co-organizers: Carissa Vogel (carissa-vogel@uiowa.edu) or Amanda Runyon (arunyon@law.upenn.edu).
